Hnizdovsky Jacques

Jacques Hnizdovsky (1915–1985) was a Ukrainian artist, graphic designer, and ex-libris master who gained worldwide recognition for his exquisite woodcuts.

He was born on January 27, 1915, in the village of Pylypch, now Chortkiv Raion, Ternopil Oblast, Ukraine.
In 1938, he studied at the Warsaw Academy of Arts on a scholarship granted by Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky.
From 1939, he continued his studies at the Zagreb Academy of Arts (Croatia). After leaving Zagreb in 1944, he ended up in a displaced persons camp near Munich, where he stayed until 1949.
In 1949, he emigrated to the United States, settling in Saint Paul, Minnesota, where he worked as a designer for the advertising firm Brown and Bigelow.
From 1956 to 1958, he refined his craft in Paris.
Hnizdovsky passed away on November 8, 1985, in New York City and was interred in the columbarium of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. On November 5, 2005, his ashes were reburied at Lychakiv Cemetery in Lviv.
